Dart throwing basics - Grip
Whilst dart throwing techniques vary from player to player there are a few essential pointers that you need to master in order to begin throwing consistent darts. Missing out these fundamentals is the reason why the majority of people can’t throw their darts accurately every time. In this article we are going to discuss the best way to grip the dart and set you on the path to throwing great darts.
We need to make sure that we have your grip settled. If you see professional darts players you will notice that their grips vary massively. So clearly you will need to find a grip that works well for you, if you follow these pointers this shouldn’t be a problem.
Firstly then hold the dart in three fingers - your thumb and two forefingers, this is the minimum number of fingers you need to hold a dart so don’t try and use less otherwise you will have no stability in your throws. If this is uncomfortable for you then you can increase the number of fingers you grip with. Do this until you find a hand configuration that works well for you.
Secondly start to balance the dart; feel where the weight sits in your hand. You need to ensure that the dart remains pointing upwards at all times in your grip. Take a few practice throws with this basic grip and check that the dart remains stable in flight and remains pointing upwards as it leaves your grip. Getting a friend to check for you will make it easier for you to focus on your throw.
Thirdly ensure that the grip you are using is firm, stable and doesn’t cause any tension in the muscles of your hand, wrist and fingers. An overly tense grip will impact your throwing and the muscles will not respond correctly when you try and release your dart. This results in poor aim and flight meaning you are unlikely to hit any dart throwing consistency. Ideally you want your grip to be comfortable and not too loose so you can maintain perfect dart control through each step of the throwing process.
Finally, once you have found a comfortable grip practice with it. Try out a variety of comfortable grips and find which one works best for your game. The first comfortable grip you find might not be the only comfortable grip you can find and it might not be the best grip for your game.
